“Static” web projects are more dynamic and capable than ever, but they can also require changes in our thinking about development. Join us for a full evening of talks about possibilities and strategies for the new modern web.
Talk #1: The Quest for Static with Brian Douglas
The way of building websites and apps that delivers better performance, higher security, lower cost of scaling, and a better developer experience is here. In this talk, I will explore how we got to the point where most sites can avoid a dedicated server through the use of modern build tools and an architecture of JavaScript, APIs, Markup (the JAMstack). I will also touch a bit on the promise of Progressive Web Apps today and how static is no longer just static any more. I’ll demonstrate some examples of how using a combination of hyper-dynamic (on demand) techniques can actually reduce hosting costs and increase speed and security, while providing a rich user experience.
Speaker: Brian Douglas

Brian Douglas (@bdougieYO) is a developer at Netlify, where he was first hired to convert their Angular app to React. Since then, he has been working heavily on multiple apps using an enhanced workflow with static site generators like Hugo and Jekyll to solve common problems without servers. In his spare time, he mentors new programmers towards contributing to open source.
Talk #2: Hide Your Keys with Matt Billmann
APIs and microservices open up an ever-expanding world of possibilities for JavaScript-driven interactivity and dynamic content. However, a question that’s often asked and rarely answered is, if all of your code is in the browser, where do you hide your secret API keys? This talk will cover strategies for this and for user authentication that rely on JSON Web Tokens and tiny APIs rather than a monolithic app server.
Speaker: Matt Biilmann

Matt Biilmann (@billmann) is the founder of Netlify and regarded as one of the driving forces behind the resurgence of static websites. He founded the first static site hosting service BitBalloon, and got the founders of Github, Heroku, Rackspace and others to back him in creating Netlify, which today is the fastest growing automation platform for modern websites. As a developer, Matt has lead the development of three commercial CMSs (swears he won't do a fourth), writes more than 50 programming languages, is trilingual, and enjoys listening to beer and drinking modern jazz.
Talk #3:  Post-Monolithic Content Management with Jessica Parsons
Static site generators have offered exciting new options for web developers, but until recently, they lacked a user-friendly interface for content editing—what many would call a CMS. There's now a handful of viable solutions out there, and as they gain traction, it's leading to some interesting confusion about what a CMS means when the architecture isn't all in one giant server app. I’ll present some different approaches to the problem, including Netlify CMS, an open-source, Git-based approach that's built with React.
Speaker: Jessica Parsons

Jessica Parsons (@verythorough) has spent half her life teaching, and a quarter of it developing for the web. She now combines those passions as a developer support engineer at Netlify. Outside of her day job, she teaches workshops and develops curriculum for Girl Develop It, volunteers with OpenSMC, mentors with Write/Speak/Code, and is helping to organize Code for Good Week, coming to SFHTML5 this July.
