Join us for an evening of real-life talks with Mars Jullian and Tony Edwards from Netflix
Talk #1: How to hustle your codebase: approaching code re-architectures through the eyes of a billiards player
If you’ve been a software engineer for long enough, chances are you’ve had to re-architect code that you’ve written or that someone else on your team wrote. But re-architecting code can be quite nebulous, and it’s often hard to know where to start.
But I have discovered that code re-architecting is a lot like playing billiards. For the first six months of 2017, I spent my time re-factoring the Netflix signup flow to use React & Redux. As my inspiration and framework for the project, I drew from my experience and passion for playing pool. In billiards, we are playing against our future selves, and sometimes the easiest shot to sink isn’t the best one for the long game. Using my recent experience, I’ll talk about what we can learn from the sport of billiards to help inform code re-architectures and think through ways to set ourselves and our teams up for success.
Speaker: Mars Jullian

Talk #2: Building performant signup flows in React
With Netflix available across the world, we’re focusing on how to make our experiences great for folks with different network conditions. In this talk, we’ll discuss how we've improved our signup flow’s performance by only rendering React server-side and not on the client, and how we prefetch resources using both built-in and homegrown techniques.
Speaker: Tony Edwards

Tony Edwards (@tedwards947) is a UI Engineer at Netflix. You can take the 🤠 from Kansas but you can’t take the Kansas from the 🤠.
